Many of the descendants of this line spelled the name as Whitsitt. William used the name Whiteside in some Davidson County, Tennessee documents. The name Whiteside, Whitsett and Whitsitt were all used during the period in Amherst, Rockbridge and Henry Counties in Virginia.

William Heth Whitsitt, ANNALS OF A SCOTCH-IRISH FAMILY, pg. 240-241
Letter from Mrs. Anson Nelson of Nashville to Dr. Whitsitt, Sept. 16, 1890 (Mrs. Nelson was a mutual friend of Sarah Childress Polk and Dr. Whitsitt who sent Mrs. Nelson a list of questions concerning Mrs. Polk's family).
"Nashville, 146 North Summer Street, September 16, 1890"
"Mrs. Polk listened with lively interest to your letter, and took evident pleasure in talking of the family, seeming pleased to answer your inquiries. In those early times concerning which you are asking there was not so much appreciation of the relation of current events to history as there is now, and it was seldom that note was made of those events. This country was then a comparative wilderness, with little opportunity for recording occurrences or for keeping such records. Mrs. Polk does not know of any register of her ancestry, unless there may be a few names and dates in an old family Bible which was left to another branch of her mother's family and which she supposes is lost. She knows nothing of her ancestors in Scotland or Ireland or of any relatives living in those countries at the present time. The interesting items of tradition about the Whitsitt family in the seventeenth century, given in your letter, were entirely new to her. Mrs. Polk thinks that Mr. Jenkins, the historian, probably had access to sources of information unknown to her and that his statement is correct that her parents were married in Campbell County, Va. She has no record of the date of their marriage.
"The name of Elizabeth Whitsitt's father was 'John;' her mother's name was 'Sarah.' The family name is not remembered by Mrs. Polk. It was for her that the future Mrs. Polk was named 'Sarah.' Mrs. Polk's only sister was named for her father's mother, Susan Childress. John and Sarah Whitsitt lived in Sumner County, Tenn., and were plain country people, but were independent - owned their home, had slaves, and enjoyed the comforts of life. While Mrs. Polk was a child, they were carried to Alabama by their son, Lawrence Whitsitt, where they died at an advanced age. They had a son named 'James Whitsitt.'

"Mrs. Polk says there was no Episcopal Church in the place where her grandparents lived, and she thinks that they must have been Presbyterians, from the fact that her mother, Elizabeth Whitsitt Childress, was a devoted Presbyterian. She brought up her children strictly in the principles of that faith, although while living in the country in Rutherford County she could not be identified with the church.
"Elizabeth Whitsitt Childress had a sister, Mrs. Walton, much older than herself, living in Davidson or Sumner County - have claimed kin with Mrs. Polk, and she had a namesake, Sarah Polk Walton"

May 22, 2000, Mr. Joseph Whitsitt Strickland of Birmingham, Alabama writes:
"I am very pleased to report that I have made a visit to Hale County and have seen the graves of John and Sarah Whitsitt. I had planned on being in a neighboring county on Thursday, May 18, so I contacted Ed Avery, who owned the land that contains the gravesite (and who brought the information forward regarding the graves), and I met him on that day. He and his wife Mary Ann were very gracious and were excited to be showing the cemetery to a member of the family.
"We drove down Highway 69 to a point just south of Havana, Hale County, AL and turned off at a gate, and then into a pasture. There was a small grove of trees in the pasture, about 1/4 mile off of the road. In the shade of these trees, there are four gravesites: John and Sarah Whitsitt, and Mary and Josiah Perry. John and Sarah's graves are marked by two large ground level stone markers. Both have been broken into several pieces over the years (and apparently shifted from their original positions). I was able to roughly re-assemble the makers with the help of Mr. Avery, and, thankfully, all of the lettering is still legible.
"Mary and Josiah's graves had been marked by upright gravestones, but these had been broken off at some point and the makers themselves were moved to the cemetery at the Havana United Methodist Church a mile or so north of the original site. The broken foundation (or foot) of these two stones still remains at the original site and these have been marked with a small strip of metal containing the names and death dates.
"Mr. Avery also showed me what he believed to be the original homesite of the Whitsitts, just north of the gravesite. Both the home and the cemetery were then adjacent to the old "Huntsville Road," a major north/south road at that time.
"The graves were marked as follows:
"John Whitsitt was born, the 8th of October 1743, and died, the 11th of August 1819
"Sarah Whitsitt, was born, the 15th of January 1747, and died, the 31st of January 1831.
"Mary Perry, died 1819 - Josiah Perry, died 1831
"The grave markers need cleaning, repair and protection from further harm, and I will be contacting a Hale County descendant who the Averys referred me to. Mr. Avery would be happy for the family to have a fence erected around the graves. I'll look into this further, and if anyone has any questions, please send me an e-mail. This was a very exciting find for all of us, and I look forward to learning more about the family and their descendants. Best wishes."
Joseph Whitsitt Strickland, Birmingham, AL

Notes

November 15, 1776; James Whitsitt is one of the names of the petition of freeholders in Orange Co., North Carolina. Some of the other names are: Carns Tinnin, Charles Logue, Lawrence Thompson, Thomas Thompson, Joseph Thompson, James Mebane, Alex. Mebane, John Walker, Richard Bird

November 28, 1776; James Whitsett and Samuel Whitsett sign a petition of freeholders of Orange County, N.C.; other names are: Joseph Hart Samuel Hart James Mebane Richard Bird John Walker

Both of these petitions were initiated because the election polls in Hillsboro closed early before all of the eligible voters could cast their ballots. A riot ensued. The petitioners complained that they were denied their right to vote.

Nov 9, 1784 - Samuel Whitsett is granted 270 acres on the waters of Back Creek in Orange Co. adjacent James Whitsett; this land was originally entered by John Whitsett in 1778 and surveyed for him in 1782. This seems to indicate a relationshipe between these three Whitsetts.

Abstracts of Wills Recorded In Orange County, North Carolina 1752-1850; Nov. 25, 1788; Empson Bird, John Stockard, John Griffith and Samuel Whitsides make a bond as administratiors of the estate of James Whitsides, deceased.
Aug. 27, 1790 - Empson Bird is appointed guardian of Samuel, William and Catherine Whitesides, orphans of James Whitesides.

Goodspeed, "History of Franklin" etc. information pertaining of John Whitsett and Alpha Witty of St. Louis, Mo. provided by their son James Whitsett.  "William Whitsett, father of James was born near the northern boundary of England, and was the father of nine children, two girls and seven boys; six of his sons fought in the Revolutionary War."

[The following is an interesting story. It parallels somewhat the family tradition of the John and Apha Witty family (above), except for the difference of William Whitsett and James Whitsett. It appears that James's children were too young to have been in the Rev. War. It would not be unusual for both of the family traditions skipped a generation, thus this one attributed to James may be his father or even grandfather, and the Missouri tradition skipped those generations. The Goodspeed story was given at an earlier date than Mr. Dover's below]

Leroy Dover wrote: I am copying my grandfather's journal and found this. Bear with it as it gets a little tedious.
The Whitsett Story
Here is a quote from John Albert Dover's 1920 journal. (John and Lydia Dover were homesteaders ten miles WSW of Buffalo Montana.)
"Today (Jan. 16,1920) is the 100th birthday anniversary of Grandpa, John P. Lollar. Grand Ma was a few months older and I knew them so well; and I remember Great Grandmother Alpha Whitsett, who lived to be 85 years old and died in 1885, very well. Grandpa Lollar was born in Glenco Missouri and Grandma was born in N.C. Great grandma Lollar was a Hamilton and born in Kentucky. Great Grandpa Whitsett's name was John was born in N.C. and married Alpha Witte of N.C. Great, great grandpa Whitsett,s name was James (Sr.) And he lived in N.C. during the Revolution. He had 5 sons in the American army but he himself was a loyal old Scotchman and was hanged for a Tory but a soldier who knew him cut him down saying, "Let the d--d old fool say what he liked as it did not amount to anything since he has five sons in the American Army!"

Notes

Most of the information contained here comes from the papers of Dr. William Thorton Whitsett. No sources are documented in his papers. There are apparently no documents still in existence, other than Dr. Whitsett's, that show Samuel's parentage, the name of his spouse or the names of his children. We have used Dr. Whitsett's list of children; however most of this information is supported by indirect evidence. Dr. Whitsett claimed that Samuel was the son of Henry Whitsett.  There is strong evidence contrary to Dr. Whitsett's claim.  There is no evidence of a Henry Whitsett in Orange County.  Dr. Whitsett evidently confused Henry Weitzel (Whitsell) with Henry Whitsett.  It is my claim, based on circumstantial evidence that Samuel was one of the sons of John Whitsett who died in Orange County in 1786.

November 28, 1776; James Whitsett and Samuel Whitsett sign a petition of freeholders of Orange County, N.C.; other names are: Joseph Hart, Samuel Hart, James Mebane, Richard Bird, John Walker.

Both of these petitions were initiated because the election polls in Hillsboro closed early before all of the eligible voters could cast their ballots. A riot ensued. The petitioners complained that they were denied their right to vote.

Deed Book 23, pg. 49, N.C.  Nov. 9, 1784; land grant no. 708 to Samuel Whitsett, on waters of Back Creek adjacent land of James Whitsett (this deed is dated November 9, 1784 but recorded in the deed book that covers a period in the 1820's. Perhaps it was recorded as part of a probate of Samuel's estate).

Entry 2392, Grant 1517, and Deed Book 10, pg. 42; June 10, 1799 - Samuel Whittsides (sic); warrant issued, entered [recorded] March 1794, Book no. 101, pg. 284; 190 acres on Back Creek adjacent John McMinnery, Richard Cope, George Boyd, William Bradford and Samuel's own line. Deed states land was adjacent John Reeves, Boyd, Bradford, McMinnery, Thos. Linch's corner, Boyd's corner.

Deed Book 15-194; Nov. 11, 1815; Josiah Turner, Shff. sells land adj. John Reaves supposedly belonging to Sam'l and Joseph Whitsett or one of them for a sum of 9.8.10 pounds, recovered against Samuel and Joseph Whitsett by Cartlett Campbell, 31 Mar. 1800; Joseph Armstrongs corner, Buckhorn Creek, 150 acres.

These are only a few of the records pertaining to Samuel Whitsett of Orange County.

J. S. WHITSETT
Among the pioneer settlers of Jackson county is numbered this gentleman, who for many years has been identified with the best interests of the locality, interested in all that pertains to its welfare and advancement. In all the relations of life he has been an esteemed and upright man, and today is ranked among the progressive agriculturists of the community.
The Whitsett family was of Scotch origin, and was founded in America in the early history of this country. The great-grandfather of our subject ser ed as sheriff of Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. He was at one time a very wealthy man, but owing to his great generosity lost much of his property. He removed to Kentucky when his son, James Whitsett, the grandfather of our subject, was a lad of 12 years. " Peter Tittle, Sr of Carlisle, Cumberland Co. Pa, listed in "History of Cumberland Co, Pa" as being one of its earliest settlers, before 1745. Land deed records document his residence in this area at least until 1763 and perhaps later. A deposition given by Peter, Sr in 1760 regarding the death of an Indian also gives his date of birth as 1725. A daughter Elizabeth (possibly named for her grandmother) married James Hunter (will of James Hunter) who was a neighbor in the area. Son Peter, Jr married Sarah Whitesides, also a neighbor in this area and their family is found later in Westmoreland Co, Pa"

Peter Tittle of early Pennsylvania records said to have been an "Indian Fighter" with Captain John McClellan's Company of Rangers and many other records by various researchers describe his life and times in the Westmoreland, PA area.   Source:"Custer" a book by Paul Shaffer, 1403 Midway, Windber, PA 15963 - 1966

About 1760 Peter Tittle settled in the then wilderness region of Westmoreland County on the banks of a small creek known as Nine Mile Run, in what is now Unity Twp. He was one of three brothers who came from England together, the others George and Henry Tittle. Peter's wife, Christian name Sarah, her surname being unknown. They had four sons, one daughter: James, Jonathan, Jeremiah, John and Sarah. Peter Tittle was a famous Indian fighter, and had reason for his hatred of the savages who devastated the country around his home. The family tradition says he was a good shot with his rifle and was able to count his scalps by the dozens. He was a member of Capt. John McClelland?s Company of Rangers on the Frontier of Westmoreland County from 1778 - 1783. [The date given here is probably far too early for Peter to be in Westmoreland.  He and his son show up in the tax rolls of Cumberland County in the 1760's]
His house was an occasional stopping place for soldiers during the latter part of the French and Indian War, and also during the Revolution. (This paragraph appears to be copied from another book and is proven fictional garnishment. Peter of the three mentioned is the son of George's brother, Peter, Sr. of Carlisle, PA and Henry is another 3rd generation of the area and as yet only identified as grandson of John of Bethel Twp and son of another brother of George.)

FROM: Bill Whiteside, August 19, 2007
Regarding the William Whiteside [Menallen Twp., Fayette Co.] 1742-1815, I can make a pretty strong case that he is the William who married the Quaker Hannah Miller in New Garden, Chester Co.in 1766.. No actual proof though. It seems reasonable that there must have been children of that marriage but I have not been able to establish proof for any. It also appears that William Whitsett arrived in the area a couple of years before William Whiteside. Both Williams apparently are loose ends as far as family connections are concerned.
If the birthdates for both are correct, they are too close together to be father and son, and obviously, since they are both named William they are not brothers. Cousins maybe?

Resided at various times at Connellsville, Layton, Pittsburg and Jacks Run, Pennsylvania. Buried at Perryopolis, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Parent of thirteen children, one boy and twelve girls.

Mr. J.E. Whitsett, Weatherford Tex.

Dear Sir:
I enclose you clipping from the Ashville, N.C. Citizen.
I am the youngest son of Ralph Crawford Whitsett and Rachel Dunn Whitsett of Va. My grandfather, Wm. Whitsett, fought in the Revolution, was under Col. Crawford and married Col. Crawford's niece, Hadessa.
I am of Scotch-Irish descent and all my forebears came from Va. Grandfather was born in 1752, Father in 1801, and self in 1852.
If you can figure out any relation I would be pleased to hear from you.
I have my winter home at Eustis, Fla. And leave for there last of this week. I would have been there but have been laid up for over a month with an infected right hand.

Yours truly,  H.G. Whitsett

P.S. My oldest Brother's name was James Estel Whitsett. I have one Brother, A.H. living at Mt. Ida and sister, M.H. Whitsett Hindron living in Dayto [sic] Wash. She is past 90.

Mr. J.E. Whitsett  Weatherford Tex.

Your letter of Nov. 24 received here. Owing to bad weather in mountains we did not get started here till the 19th and got here the 21st and it takes some time too get tying [sic] cleaned up after six months absence.
I am confident that we are some kind of kinfolks. I will give you our family tradition as I remember it. We are of Scotch Irish decent and are from Virginia. James - John and William Whitsett left Va. To go south and my Grandfather William stopped in Pa. And his two brothers went on south and grandfather never heard from either of them while he lived.
My grandfather William was born in 1752 and married Hadessa Crawford a niece of Col. William Crawford of Revolutionary fame.
Grandfather fought under Col. Crawford. Col. Crawford and grandfather lived at Connellsville Pa and the City have recentley erected a monument to his memory. Grandfather William also lived at Layton Pa and Pittsburg and Jacks Run Pa. Grandmother died and was buried at Layton Pa.
Grandfather and Grandmother had thirteen children. Twelve girles and one boy who was the youngest and my father born in 1801 and died at my house in 1892. My father and mother had thirteen children of which I am the youngest born May 31 1852. My mother was Rachel Estep a Daughter of Dr. James Estep a practiceing physitien [sic] and baptist preacher all his life. My grandmother was Rachel Dunn an F.F.V. of Va.
I have one brother A.H.Whitsett living at Mt. Ida Ark and a sister R Hadessa Whitsett Hendron living at Dayton Washington. She is past 90 and spry as a crickit.
My daughter Gertrude Whitsett Kipp is applying to get into the Daughters of the Revolution. Grandfathers service record under William Crawford in the state records at Philadelphia Pa. Are the same as our traditions. An old history of Fayette Co. Pa. By Nelson speaks of my grandfather as being a great indian fighter and scout and a friend of George Washington.
I was born in Fayette Co. Pa. Was in Ky. Six years and came to Fla. In 1890. Bought a summer home at Brevard N.C. six years ago. It is up in the mountains on the head of French Bread River.
Mountains around us run from 3000 to 6000 ft. The river is 2300.
I have tried to give you the high points of our familey and if you can connect up I will be much pleased.
If interested I can go into more detail. I do not think that there are very many living whose grandfather fought for our independence.
I have had some correspondence with William Thorton Whitsett of Whitsett N.C. but have not gone to see him yet. He lives over 200 miles from Brevard. If you should get near here do not fail to come to see me. Hoping that we may get better acquainted I remain

Very Truly Yours

... I was checking out your site a few days ago, and you've done it. You figured out the PA Whitsetts!!!! I'm impressed. I've worked for 20 years and couldn't find William W. Whitsett's father. I have some facts to add to what you have, and some questions. Here's some info on William's daughters. Amanda went to Texas, Galveston to be exact and was alive after the Civil War and visiting Ralph in Whitsett, PA. I was in the Fayette Co. Library working on the Vail family, and the librarian read me an excerpt from the Genius of Liberty (the Fayeete Co. Newspaper) that said Ralph Whitsett of Perryopolis was being visited by his sister. The date on the paper meant that it had to be Amanda, as the other 2 were dead by then, but, alas, I didn't take time to make notes or to copy the paper, as I was working on Vails. (I can only get my Vails back to James, father of Jane (1805-1890). So much for hindsight!

1800. Joseph's land in Bourbon County was described as 130 acres of second rate land on Paddys Creek, originally entered and surveyed in the name of Daniel Callahan and apparently purchased by Joseph Whitsett from William Johnson. Paddys Creek (listed as Paddy Run on present-day topographical maps) empties into the South Fork of the Licking River about a mile south of Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky. The headwaters are west of Colville, Harrison County, and appear to be entirely within Harrison County, instead of extending east into bordering Bourbon and Nicholas Counties.
