The information on Samuel Whitsett of Ireland and the Irish Whitsett's comes mainly from Dr. William Thornton Whitsett, PhD, of Whitsett, North Carolina. Prof. Whitsett was a historian and professor at the University of North Carolina during the early twentieth century. I have a copy of his notes on the Whitsett family history that were obtained from his daughter Mrs. Carrie Whitsett Hayes in 1980, and from his papers at the University of North Carolina obtained around the same time. Neither of these documents includes reference to sources. Professor Whitsett died in 1934 before publishing his work. Mrs. Hayes did not know of any other documents related to these notes. She did know that Prof. Whitsett had obtained a family Bible from the descendants of Revolutionary War hero William Wirt Whitsett of Fayette County, Pennsylvania who supposedly was born in Ireland. After Prof. Whitsett’s death the Pennsylvania family asked for the return of the Bible, but it could not be found. My own research shows that during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries there were Whitsett families in Counties Armagh and Antrim in Ireland. One can find the names of Samuel, William, Joseph and Robert Whitsett. Because of the lack of source documentation, it is impossible to evaluate the validity of Prof. Whitsett’s conclusions. One should exercise caution when using Prof. Whitsett’s information. Perhaps a more reliable source on the early family is Dr. William Heth Whitsitt of Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Whitsitt of Nashville was a prominent theologian and professor of history.  He states in articles published in 1904 in Nashville that his information for William and Elizabeth Dawson Whitsitt who came from Ireland was from his aunt, daughter of William Whitsitt (and Ellen Menees) of Nashville who was the son of William and Elizabeth (Dawson) Whitsitt.

"The Whitsitt family is widely extended. Persons bearing the surname and blood may be found in nearly every portion of the United States and Canada, as also in Ireland and Scotland. To treat of them all would be beyond my powers and learning. I shall therefore confine my attention to that small portion of the family with which I chance to be most acquainted, namely the Nashville Whitsitts. The best records of these have been kept by the Blakley family, of Russellville, Ky. They rest upon the industry and authority of three persons, namely, Mrs. Margaret (Whitsitt) Blakey; her son, Doctor George Douglas Blakey, and her grandson, Honorable Churchill H. Blakey, all of whom are now deceased. They were industrious chroniclers, and the family owes them a debt of gratitude.

First Entry.---The opening entry of the Whitsitt annals is expressed in the following words:

'William Whitsitt, the son of William Whitsitt, the son of Samuel Whitsitt (all of Ireland), married Elizabeth Dawson, of Ireland. William Whitsitt, son of the aforesaid William, married Miss Ellen Menees, daughter of James Menees, who married the widow of Ranney Breathitt, formerly Miss Ellen Cardwell; died at the residence of his son, the Rev. James Whitsitt, in the vicinity of Nashville, Tennesee, July 14, 1811. Ellen Menees Whitsitt, his wife was born -------, and died at Rural Choice, Kentucky, the home of her son-in-law, George Blakey, September 13, 1818.' "

No recent researcher has been able to find documentation to support Dr. Whitsitt's claim as to the ancestors of William Whitsitt who married Elizabeth Dawson, but it seems plausible based on the fact that the information was passed down to him from his great aunt and her family who apparently kept a record of the early family.

No recent researcher has been able to find documentation listing the names of the father and grandfather in Ireland; but, it seems plausible based on the fact that the information was passed down to Dr. Whitsitt by the family of his great aunt who apparently kept a record of the early family. The children of William listed here is based on strong circumstantial evidence. They were a family group that located in the area near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in Lebanon Township of Lancaster County beginning shortly before 1740. I believe there were four brothers and a sister, but if they were not siblings, they were close relatives.

"I am copying my grandfather's journal and found this ...

Whitsett family tradition says that William was the oldest of the three brothers that came from Ireland and settled in Pennsylvania about 1740. The Whitsitt's of Nashville, Tennessee claimed to be descended from William through his son William and evidence seems to support this claim.

John was one of the Whitsett brothers family tradition says came from Ireland around 1730-40 and first settled in Pennsylvania near Harrisburg and later removed to Virginia and North Carolina.

In 1786 the sale of the estate of John Whitsett, deceased, was recorded in Orange County. The return from the sale mentions the following Whitsetts: Widow Whitsett (no name), Mary Whitsett, Sarah Whitsett, James Whitsett and Samuel Whitsett. Samuel paid rent for the mill and plantation for four years. Amoung other names listed on the return are John Stockart (Stockard); John Griffith; John Reaves; Alex. Minoway; Steven Hart; Robert Tinnen; Abraham Thompson, John Thompson. This estate sale is the only known source of information on possible children of John Whitsett of Orange County.

The records listed below for John Welsh help to show a possible connection to the Whitsett families, including those of Ralph, James and William, and evidence of a son, John Welsh, Jr. who may have been the only child of Elizabeth and John Sr.  The migration of John Welsh from Lebanon Twp., Lancaster Co. to Cumberland, York and Westmoreland Counties mirrors that of the family of Ralph Whitsett.

November 25, 1745: Warrant for John Welsh, Lebanon Township, Lancaster Co., 150 acres.  Warrant Register states the land was patented by heirs of Peter Yetter (name John Welsh scratched out) February 8, 1785.  There is some confusion here, because the same land based on the same warrant was surveyed for the heirs of Peter Yetter on January 12, 1785.

June 2, 1753, [draft labeled John Welsh Cont'g 8a. 36 ps & allowances; surrounded by tracts for Robert Cannon, now Jacob Smith and Abraham Thorley said to be Robert Cannon originally now Samuel Plantz & Andrew Shell]
"A draght of a piece of land situate in Fairview Township formerly Newbury in the County of York Containing as set forth 8a. 36 pcs. & allowances & Surveyed in pursuance of a warrant granted to John Welsh for 50a. Dated the 2nd day of June A.D. 1753. The same land is now owned by Jacob Smith included in a larger tract & no access to any papers could be had & Surveyed the above on the 10th day of April 1833 ..." [This is confusing, the application for the warrant for this land was registered in the book for 1766-69, a few lines above Samuel Whitsit; it appears that maybe the date on the survey return for the warrant should be 1763 vs. 1753] [8, 9]
