DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM2 WHITSITT
OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, INDIANA

Born May 06, 1767 in Pennsylvania, died May 09, 1854 in Jefferson County, Indiana. He was the eldest son of Samuel and Margaret Whitsitt of Montgomery County, Kentucky.  William had fourteen children by his first three wives, ten sons and four daughters.

This is a work in progress.  I am researching the known descendants and adding that information as I complete each generation.  This may be a lengthy process, so please be patient.

I welcome information from living descendants and other researchers.  I reserve the right to edit any material sent to me, but I will give all contributors credit for their information.  I use a stricter rule for documentation of sources than many on-line family trees.  Please include your sources of information for each person in your family tree.

Military: 1812 1st Regiment, (Sutton's) Ohio Militia [5]; NOTE:  there were at least two, possibly three William Whitsitt/ Whitsett/ Whiteside from Kentucky in the War of 1812; William of Logan County, son of William and Ellen Menees Whitsitt of Russellville, officer in the Kentucky Mounted Volunteers was one of them.  I believe William of the Ohio Militia to be William Whitsitt later of Indiana.  On 30 June 1812 William Whitsett also of Clark County, Ky., son of John Whitsett of Orange County, N. C. made a power of attorney to Henry Bradley giving Bradley the right to sell land and provide for Whitsett's family as directed by his wife (DB 9, pp. 49, 50, 77).  This sounds very much like William was preparing to go to war.

Comments:    At the moment we have only slim evidence to support the conclusion that this John WHITSITT was the son of William and Anne McGee.  A yDNA profile from a descendant of this John would be of tremendous help to prove or disprove this line.

Death:  Bet. 1850-1860 Probably Jennings County, Indiana.  In 1850 John was living in Jennings County, Indiana; in 1860 his widow Mary was living with her son Andrew Jackson Whitsett in Ray Township of Ray County, Indiana.  An unverified source gives the date of John's death as February 24, 1855 in Vermilion County, Illinois.  I can find no evidence that John died in Illinois.  There was a John Whitsett in Vermilion County as early as 1836 (according to tax lists), but I do not believe it is the same John Whitsett.

May 17, 1840.  I was unable to locate Sarah on the 1850 census.  Information is from a family tree on Ancestry.com but is unverified.  No sources were listed in the OneWorld Family Tree.  Dodd's "Indiana Marriages Before 1850 lists two marriages for a Sarah WHITSETT: (1) James STEWART, 23 December 1834, Jefferson County; (2) Stephen COMBS, 20 October 1839 in Johnson County.  Sarah would have only fourteen in 1834 making the Stephen Combs marriage the likely candidate.)
