On October 12, 1756 Hans Noa Frederick was attacked and killed by Shawnee and his young son Thomas was taken to live with them for ten years, after which he was forcibly removed from his foster Shawnee family and returned -- with no one to claim him.

It was much later that he was reunited with his white mother and siblings, who had moved to another region, and got back his name.

I have found him mentioned on a Shawnee website, among names of other people from that time that they remember.

I think of Thomas this time of year. He was my ancestor, perhaps he was yours, too. Maybe take a moment out of your day and consider his life, and what he might think of ours?

Great website, cousin Ron!

Here's the Shawnee site I mentioned. You can look Thomas up under Frederick or Kee Saw So So.

http://www.shawnee-traditions.com/Names-12.html

I am related through Thomas' son George. His daughter Sarah was my great-grandmother's g-g-grandmother.

Now, the rest of this I relate to you as hearsay, I have not been able to confirm with primary sources.
My degree is in history (Native American history) and I understand the importance of documentation. Someday when I have more time I'd like to really pursue the facts behind this.

I had heard that Noa was killed near a stream, and he had his sons with him. The boys were taken, but Thomas never saw his brother again. I have heard that his mother and sisters survived the attack. The mother later moved to Baltimore and remarried.

When the French and Indian war ended and the British made the Shawnee give back the prisoners taken, Thomas was forced to go and was upset at having to lose his foster family.

There was no one to claim him at Lancaster, PA where the prisoners were taken to be reclaimed, but he was taken in by a Quaker shoemaker named Benjamin Stone. Thomas took on the Stone name and traveled as a shoe repairman.

The story goes he talked about his past in the hopes of finding his mother again, and someone eventually recognized his story and took him to his mother. Thomas was supposedly recognized by his mother by a scar on his neck from a boil that had been lanced by his father. Thomas then resumed using the Frederick name and married Ms. Tibbins.

He did fight in the Revolution - we have documentation on that. Afterward, he lived near some water and was able to sell farm goods by moving them on barges downstream for sale.

When he moved shortly before he died, he purchased twelve parcels of land, one for each of his children.

"Thomas Frederick was born in Columbiana County, Ohio December 1, 1778 [incorrect, he was born in Pennsylvania] and was married May 2, 1804 to Elizabeth Shank who was born March 8, 1785. He removed to Chippewa township in 1813 settling on the farm where his son Henry lives, where he died, aged ninety-three years. He was a soldier in the war of 1812. It mentions daughters Margaret, Dorathy Elizabeth and Sophia; son, Jacob and son-in-law William Turner. The estate was settled in 1874.
